Lab Mission & Values

The primary objectives of the Family Adversity Lab, led by Dr. Molly Franz, are to (1) understand the effects of PTSD and trauma-related distress on survivors’ family relationships, and to (2) identify and promote sources of strength and resilience among individuals coping with trauma-related distress.

Existing research highlights myriad negative consequences of trauma and adversity on individuals, couples, and families. Yet research frequently overlooks the narratives of strength and wisdom among families who demonstrate resilience in the most challenging of circumstances. In the Family Adversity Lab, we strive to gain knowledge and learn from families who face challenges that should never have existed in the first place. We take responsibility for understanding how oppression and marginalization have harmed families. Our first goal is to authentically capture the joys and hardships of individuals coping with remarkable challenges. Our second goal is to leverage our position as researchers to pursue initiatives that bolster the wellbeing of vulnerable families. We strive to translate the invaluable insights and feedback from our participants into tangible efforts toward the reduction of suffering.
